When Van Tio was very young, his parents divorced and were unable to care for him. Van Tio's grandfather raised him for many years, but as the grandfather aged he was unable to provide an education for his grandson. In 2007, Van Tio came to Living Faith Children's Home. Since that time, he has not had any contact with his parents.

Van Tio enjoys playing soccer. His goal is to some day work in agriculture.
