Kieu Oanh's father died in 2006. Her mother lives in Danang, where she sells lottery tickets. Once a month she visits her children and pays about 100,000vnd ($5.73) for their care.

Kieu Oanh's oldest brother, who is 14, takes care of Kieu Oanh and her brother, Nghia. The boy does everything--washing, shopping, cooking, even singing Kieu Oanh to sleep.
