Huyen Tram's father and one of her siblings died in an accident with a land mine. This left Huyen Tram's mother alone to support three children and her mother-in-law. Huyen Tram's mother found work in Danang, some distance away from their district. Because the distance was too great to travel each day, she moved to Danang and left her children with their maternal grandparents. She visits them about once a month.

Huyen Tram's mother makes very little money (the equivalent of between $56-60 USD/month), so sending the money to support her three children and her mother-in-law is very difficult. For that reason, she would like for her two daughters to go to the new orphanage so that they can receive adequate care.
