Dung's father died when Dung was 2 years old. Since that time, Dung's mother has had another baby; that child is now 2 years old. Dung's mother found work in a province of the highlands, and lives there with her youngest child. She earns only enough for the two of them. Dung stays with his grandmother, who is 69 years old. Dung's grandmother has poor health and is unable to care for her grandson any longer.
